Mets To Sign Jose Reyes

Jun 26, 2016 8:29 AM

The New York Mets are expected to sign Jose Reyes as soon as Saturday, according to a report.

Reyes isn't yet a free agent, but the veteran is expected to clear release waivers on Saturday afternoon.

Astros Have Done 'Homework' On Yulieski Gourriel

Jun 25, 2016 8:00 AM

The Houston Astros have done their due diligence on Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel.

Gourriel was recently declared a Major League free agent and is working out privately for teams.

"We've done our homework and we're very well aware of the player and what we believe he's capable of doing," Jeff Luhnow said.

Luhnow didn't say whether the Astros planned to have Gourriel in for a private workout.

Rockies Request Waivers On Jose Reyes To Release Him

Jun 24, 2016 8:44 AM

The Colorado Rockies have requested waivers on Jose Reyes for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

If he goes unclaimed, Reyes will be a free agent by midday Saturday.

Reyes did not participate in spring training and was suspended through May 31 after being charged with domestic violence for an altercation with his wife in Hawaii last October.

Royals Request Unconditional Release Waivers On Omar Infante

Jun 21, 2016 7:01 PM

The Royals have requested unconditional release waivers on Omar Infante.

Infante figures to clear waivers as no Major League team wants to take on his salary. He'll be free to sign with any club for only the pro-rated portion of the league minimum.

Kansas City designated Infante for assignment last week.

Mets To Work Out Yulieski Gourriel

Jun 21, 2016 6:53 PM

Sandy Alderson said New York Mets officials plan to work out Cuban defector Yulieski Gourriel, who has been declared a free agent by Major League Baseball.

The 32-year-old infielder is also drawing interest from the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Houston Astros.

The Mets have lost David Wright, potentially for the season and beyond, after the captain underwent a discectomy and fusion to address a herniated disk in his neck last Thursday.

"We're going to do our due diligence on that player," Alderson said about Gourriel. "So we've made arrangements to do that. At the same time, this player hasn't seen live pitching for weeks if not months. It's not clear how long a player in that situation would take to be ready. And, of course, there is the investment and all the other issues -- and making an evaluation currently of the player based on workouts and not game competition. But we're going to go through that process."

Mets Now Considering Jose Reyes

Jun 21, 2016 7:27 AM

The New York Mets are at least considering a reunion with Jose Reyes once he becomes a free agent, according to a source.

Last week a team official said there was "virtually no chance" of the Mets bringing back Reyes.

The Mets ranked 29th in the Major Leagues in batting average (.234) and 25th in on-base percentage (.307) entering play Monday.

"Of course we're concerned," Jeff Wilpon said. "Nobody is happy with the way we're playing. I meet with Sandy [Alderson], Terry [Collins], [assistant GM] John Ricco all the time. They're working on things to try to get us where we need to go and start playing a little bit better. ... We started off fine. It's been the last week. But what you don't want is the week to run into two weeks that runs into a month and hurts you very badly. I think we're addressing it. I know Sandy and the guys are working hard on what the next step should be."

Phillies Aren't Expected To Spend Big In Free Agency

Jun 20, 2016 7:46 AM

The Philadelphia Phillies will have money to spend this coming offseason, but they aren't expected to use it on a weak class of free agents.

Philadelphia will have $24.5 million committed to players that won't play for them in 2017, but little else. Ryan Howard has a $10 million buyout for his option and Matt Harrison is due another $13 million, most of which will likely be covered by insurance because of a chronic injury.

As the roster currently stands, Freddy Galvis would be Philadelphia's highest-paid player in 2017. He's making $2 million this season.

Royals Designate Omar Infante For Assignment

Jun 16, 2016 7:38 AM

The Kansas City Royals have designated Omar Infante for assignment, filling his roster spot with left-hander Brian Flynn.

Infante, 34, has been a disappointment since signing with Kansas City before the 2014 season. The Royals still owe him the rest of a $7.75 million salary this year and another $10 million down the line, including a buyout of a 2018 option.

Mets Not Interested In Reunion With Jose Reyes

Jun 16, 2016 3:27 PM

The New York Mets aren't interested in a reunion with Jose Reyes, who was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies this week.

There is virtually no chance the Mets would bring Reyes back, according to a source.

By designating Reyes for assignment, the Rockies have as long as a week to trade him.

After he clears waivers, any team may pick up Reyes for just a prorated portion of the Major League minimum salary ($507,500).
